Abstract:
China’s rapid expansion of wind and solar power is central to global decarbonization, yet their inherent fluctuations challenge power system stability. Hydropower offers critical renewable flexibility, but its nationwide stabilization potential remains poorly quantified.
In this talk, I present a nationwide, site-resolved optimization framework that benchmarks hydro–wind–solar integration against stand-alone wind–solar systems, quantifying how effectively China’s hydropower fleet can dampen fluctuations and identifying optimal mixes across sites. The results demonstrate hydropower’s enormous benefits in dampening wind–solar fluctuations and support the strategic development of future hydro–wind–solar bases across China.
