Abstract:

Timely monitoring and assessment of neighborhood change are critical for effective smart city management and policy evaluation. Traditional approaches often rely on census or survey data, treating neighborhoods as isolated units. However, as urban areas become increasingly interconnected, neighborhood changes influence—and are influenced by—population flows, which reflect shifts in intra-urban interaction systems. This study explores the relationship between socioeconomic changes and the functional roles of neighborhoods within intra-urban interaction networks. Using commuting networks and income indicators as a foundation, findings from multiple mega-cities demonstrate that mobility data can serve as a valuable tool for identifying neighborhoods undergoing economic change. By complementing conventional survey methods, this approach enables localized observations and provides novel insights into the dynamics of neighborhood economic status, as revealed through mobility-driven signals.
