Abstract:

Urban population dynamics, driven by human mobility, exhibit distinct spatiotemporal patterns. Analyzing anonymized mobile phone data from multiple cities, we uncover scale-invariant population fluctuations between urban centers and peripheries, governed by a novel scaling law. Localized fluctuations also demonstrate temporal scaling with a spatially decaying exponent. These findings provide crucial insights into the interplay between human activity, urban structure, and the dynamics of people-centric urban systems.

Professor Bo HUANG

Chair Professor, Department of Geography, HKU

Professor Bo Huang is Chair Professor in the Department of Geography at The University of Hong Kong, where he is also the Deputy Director of the Urban Systems Institute. His research focuses on spatial intelligence, leveraging remote sensing, GIS, and computational social science to address critical urban challenges, including climate-conscious urban growth, sustainable spatial planning, carbon neutrality, and public health. His work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including an RGC Senior Research Fellowship, a Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professorship, and a gold medal from the Geneva Invention Convention. He has secured substantial funding for research projects from various sources, including the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Professor Huang serves as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science and was the Editor-in-Chief of Comprehensive GIS (Elsevier). He has published extensively in high-impact journals, including Nature Human Behavior and Nature Communications. His research group is currently exploring quantitative laws, trusting that they hold promise to untangle increasing urban complexity.
