Abstract:
Landscapes are where biodiversity and ecosystems reside and function; where people live, work, and play; and where people and nature interact and coevolve. Forests, grasslands, lakes, cities, and their mosaics are all landscapes of different kinds. Ecologists and geographers cannot escape landscapes in any study relevant to the real world. Academics claim their disciplinary territories, but problems in real landscapes completely ignore and utterly scorn disciplines. Thus, to make our landscapes beautiful, resilient, and sustainable, landscape scientists and practitioners must collaborate more closely and extensively than ever before. Almost every discipline seems relevant to sustainability in one way or another, but ecology and geography provide the “material linchpin” for harmonizing our wellbeing aspirations with nature’s ecosystem services. It seems clear that if we are to achieve global sustainability, we must make our landscapes sustainable first, not the other way around. In this talk, I present the landscape sustainability science framework, which links landscape patterns to biodiversity, ecosystem services, landscape design and governance, and human wellbeing, in order to promote interdisciplinary collaborations across natural and social sciences for sustainability.
