Dear colleagues and friends,
It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Professor C.K. Leung, former Professor and Head of the Department of Geography and Geology at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), on February 3, 2024, at the age of 89. Throughout his career, he was a dedicated educator and researcher, making significant contributions to the fields of urban geography in China. He will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of working with him or learning from him.
Professor Leung earned his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Arts in Geography from HKU, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, U.S. He started his professional journey at our university as a Lecturer in the Department of Extra-Mural Studies in 1965. In September 1973, he transferred to the Department of Geography and Geology, where he was chiefly responsible for teaching the geography of China, political geography, and later transportation geography.
In 1988, Professor Leung was promoted to the position of Professor of the Department of Geography and Geology and became the first Head of the Department of Chinese ethnicity. He held the position of Dean of Arts from 1988 to 1992. He was named Justice of the Peace by the Government in July 1992. Professor Leung retired early in December 1993 and was appointed as an Honorary Professor in 1994. In 1994, Professor Leung left HKU to become the first President of the then Hong Kong Institute of Education (now the Education University of Hong Kong), where he devoted his life to education.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for Professor Leung's unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to both our university and the field of geography. During these difficult times, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Professor Leung's family, friends, and colleagues. We will always remember Professor Leung as an accomplished educator, dedicated researcher, and a true advocate for the study of geography.
We kindly invite you to join us in paying tribute to the late Professor C.K. Leung and offering our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Yours sincerely,
Department of Geography
