Abstract:
This presentation examines Geospatial Intelligence (GeoAI) for advancing geographic knowledge discovery. It first outlines the dual objectives of geographic research: acquiring idiographic (place-specific) and nomothetic (generalizable) knowledge, underscoring Earth science’s distinct value in studying humanity’s sole habitat. The talk then differentiates spatial intelligence from geospatial intelligence, highlighting core GeoAI challenges such as spatial heterogeneity and cross-region model generalization. Finally, it reviews representative case studies—including spatially explicit neural networks (e.g., GNNWR), geographic representation learning models (e.g., Sphere2Vec), spatial interaction law discovery frameworks (e.g., GravityNet), and generative GeoAI applications (e.g., MetroGAN, RSGPT)—to demonstrate the synergistic potential of integrating AI methodologies with geographic disciplinary foundations.

Boya Professor of GIScience, Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems, Peking University
Prof. Yu Liu is Boya Professor of GIScience at the Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems, Peking University. His research interests focus on several theoretical aspects of GIScience and analytical methods for various big geo-data. The term "Social Sensing" coined by Dr. Liu's team has attracted much attention from academia. He has conducted about 10 research projects as PI or Co-PI granted by NSFC (National Science Foundation of China) and MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) of China. Dr. Liu has published 300+ refereed papers in international journals including Nature, AAAG, IJGIS, and IEEE TPAMI. He is currently editorial member of several prestigious journals such as AAAG, IJGIS, and CEUS, and president of CPGIS and ACM SIGSPATIAL CHINA.
