Abstract:
Global food systems face mounting pressure from climate change and growing population demands. Intensifying climate extremes threaten crop productivity, while conventional responses—rising fertilizer use and converting forests into cropland—drive further GHG emissions and accelerate environmental degradation. Achieving food security without worsening climate and ecological risks is a critical challenge. Here, we use geospatial data and analytics to quantify how different conservation management practices affect crop yields and greenhouse gas emissions. Our results show that optimizing management strategies and crop distribution can unlock substantial yield gains while dramatically reducing emissions and environmental footprints. This work highlights a viable pathway for sustainable intensification, demonstrating that reconciling food production with planetary health is both achievable and essential.
