HKU GEOGRAPHY: Monthly Research Talks

Exploring the Development and Characteristics of Earth Foundation Models

Date: 19 JUL 2024 (Friday)

Time: 15:00-15:15 (HKT)

(No registration required)

Abstract:

In recent years, we have witnessed the tremendous development of foundation models, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and Vision-Language Foundation Models (VLFMs). Foundation models have become the effective paradigm for handling big data. In earth observation tasks, which also have massive amounts of available data, various foundation models have been constructed. I will explore the development and characteristics of these earth foundation models. Firstly, the progress of language and vision foundation models will be introduced, followed by an exploration of how these methods and models have influenced earth foundation models. Subsequently, characteristics distinguishing earth foundation models from other language and vision foundation models will be discussed. Lastly, potential directions for the development of foundation models in earth observation tasks will be explored.
